Bakers Hill RDA Carriage Driving centre provides a wonderful service to people who wish to benefit from therapeutic and recreational equestrian activities, yet are unable to ride. With a specially designed program and under close supervision, each person will have an opportunity to become a driver of a horse and carriage and experience the challenges and exhilaration of being part of this equestrian experience.
Each driver is accompanied in the vehicle by an accredited coach known as a ‘Whip’. The ‘Whip’ and the driver each have a set of reins, so that the ‘ Whip’ can control the pony if necessary.
Horse care and management are also part of the drivers experience, along with Carriage Driving skills, such as: dressage, obstacle driving, games and pleasure driving.
Competitive Carriage Driving is a thriving and growing sport in Australia. Drivers with Disabilities will have opportunities whenever possible to compete in this sport.
What can be achieved?
RDAWA has developed a safe and effective program of Carriage Driving, our drivers and volunteers enjoy the fresh air and exercise that participation in sport gives. They also gain much pleasure from helping the horses to give their best.
Drivers gain therapeutic as well as recreational sporting benefits through participation in RDAWA programs. Drivers demonstrate improved coordination, muscle tone, social skills, confidence and self esteem after just a few sessions.
