Collie - Our Biggest Story Yet

The Big News at Collie is the successful completion and opening of our huge Covered Arena. It started modestly with a question from two of our young volunteers - “Why can’t Collie have a covered arena?” It didn’t sound like a dream that would ever come true, but this is Collie and the girls were given the task of getting the project under way.  A possible site was identifi ed an area once cleared as a paddock, alongside but lower than the existing grass arena. Rocks and regrowth were cleared, and the area was shaped for drainage and construction, and compacted. Many man hours later, GoJo MoJo of Kulin raised the fi rst section of the roof on the frame, and we had our fi rst taste of shade. The south and west sides have metal cladding, and the north and east sides are open for spectators.  Almost two million litres of water are expected to fall on the roof each year, and this is conducted to tanks, with overfl ow ending up in the dam at a lower level.  Ablution facilities, stalls and storage make it hugely practical, and we can now provide year-round tuition with no riding cancelled because of adverse weather conditions.  Excitement and emotions ran high on opening day when our riders put on a display of riding and vaulting prior to a surprise announcement - the venue was to be named the Rodney Josephine Arena in recognition of the contribution of Rodney Cross and Josephine Williams, without whom the project could not have come to fruition.
